This is an interesting story. Check it out!

Personally, I do not entirely agree. The devil is in the detail. Angela Merkel is an outstanding politician and is still holding the purse strings. In some ways, Angela Merkel is beginning to remind me of Lady Thatcher when she was Prime Minister.

What do you think?

  1. The EU and the US virtually held a political gun to her head to cave in like this. This smells like a ton of backroom George Soros type dealings.

I admire Angela Merkel immensely but I think she failed to appeal to the German public’s “Nationalistic” side. She is a master politician but could stand to improve her skills as an orator.

    • Henry, many thanks for replying to my blog. I agree with you that pehaps Angela Merkel has been a bit slow to influence German public opinion but she is an excellent politician. Let’s hope that it wwill come right in the end.

      • The world is heading in two different directions these days.

Not too may “Great World Leaders” floating around these days.

I find myself wishing for another round of politicians like Reagan, Thatcher, Netanyahu and so on.

Right now the world has elected a pile of whimps that seem to talk out of both sides of their face. How pathetic.

  3. I wish she were like good old Maggie, because then she would not have caved in to the blackmail of the Spanish and Italian Prime Ministers.

      • Hi Alf,
Well, I might be a tad harsh on her, but I really believe that she’s not firm enough in her principles. To my mind she’s neglecting – if not betraying – the CDU’s (conservative) principles. Outwardly she might be trying to look firm as far as her European principles are concerned, but she’s not steadfast enough. Same with her policy regarding nuclear power: after first getting an extension of the time nuclear power stations would be allowed through the Bundestag, she – immediately after Fukushima, and without so much as a discussion – she reversed course by 180 degrees and pushed a quick shutdown through parliament. And her refusal to back the UN resolution re Libya was more than shameful: Germany siding with Russia and China.
What has german politics come to?!
These are just a few of my thoughts as to Angie.
        Best regards,
        Pit
P.S.: Like a friend of mine in Germany recently said: which party can I vote for in the next general election?

      • Pitt, thanks for a very interesting comment. As I was reading it, I noticed that there were many similarities with David Cameron. It is all a far cry from the politics and leadership of the likes of Margaret Thatcher.

Sadly, we seem to live in an age where political beliefs and real values have been subordinated to political expediency and short-term muddling through.

        Regards

        Alf
