It seems that when Sarkozy pledged to halve the number of immigrants that he touched a nerve with French voters.

Personally, I do not agree with the article. It glosses over the fact that Sarkozy came to power on a ticket to reform the French Public Sector, and chickened out when the going got tough.

Of course, a socialist as French President would make a difference but there are enormous risks whoever wins.

France has a bloated and grossly inefficient Public Sector, with the Private Sector burdened down by some of the highest labour on costs in Europe. To be sure, France has some world-class industries but it also has far more protected and grossly inefficient industries that need radical change.

Personally, I cannot see Sarkozy winning another term, yet alone facing up to and dealing with France’s ills.

Finally, I believe that it is fundamentally wrong for Germany to meddle in French internal politics. First we have had Greece, then Italy and now it looks like France!
