I strongly endorse the article, in particular the conclusions, namely:

Cutting state pensions would be a retrograde step.

Increasing the age of entitlement to pensioner benefits is a better way to save money than cutting pensions or trying to means-test universal payments.

However, as I indicated in an earlier blog for me there is also the challenge of taking a harder look at other policy areas before reducing the elderly’s pensions and benefits. Let me restate my earlier  points as open questions:

  1. Why don’t the political classes cut the bloated pensions of the Public Sector before tackling the whole elderly sector?
  2. Why don’t the political classes cut the bloated costs of the scroungers on unemployment and social benefits?
  3. Looking at austerity cuts made in Greece as as a benchmark of worst case austerity, just how far will the political classes in the UK go in cutting the costs of the elderly?
