It is an interesting article. Maybe things could have been better handled by the security services. According to the article, and with hindsight, it would appear so.
However, for me there is an wider factor to consider as follows.
In the “democratic west” there are security forces who are suspected of monitoring and may be concealing the fact.
In the “not quite democratic east” there are security forces who are openly monitoring and make no attempt to hide it.
Is it really better to know? Might the western model be more comfortable?
