Turkey Unrest: A Family Split Between Erdogan and Taksim – SPIEGEL ONLINE.

I was fascinated by this article but then my mind put it into wider context and I suppose that I was not really surprised. Turkey is a democracy in terms of elections but probably not in terms of accountability to the people. This seems to be an increasing trend in the World’s democracies where privacy has been subordinated and un-elected institutions like the IMF determine our futures.

Young people across the World are having a pretty tough time right now but what is interesting to observe is their united view in challenging the status quo. For me, peaceful demonstration is an acceptable face of democracy.

This leads me to an open question:

Isn’t it time for democracies to be more accountable to the people?

What do you think?
