This is a wicked problem with two principles (often labelled formal legality versus moral legitimacy) in grinding dispute. But under these ugly yet ineluctable circumstances, a default option to do nothing is a far-reaching decision in itself.

I too think this is a very shrewd move by President Obama to gain Congressional approval; he claims that that military intervention in Syria is not time limited so this gives him room for further leverage using the US’s full weight.

I support the return to democracy.

Let me now turn this to an open question:

Should President Hollande now seek French parliamentary approval before military intervention in Syria?
