Personally, I still struggle to see President Putin sanctioning a UN resolution. Whilst, the Saudi offer is a serious sweetener, I fear that it is too late to avert Western military intervention in Syria. The agenda has moved from Syrian issues per-

se  to re-establishing US credibility in a global power struggle, where Russia and China are flexing their muscles.

  1. The Saudis could not guarantee Russia retention of the Port of Tartus with the kind of Wahibi regime that they would install in Syria if Assad and his regime were to fall.

    Also Prince Bandar is not in a position to guarantee what happens in the Caucasus because he is a puppet subject to control from London and Washington.

    For that reason Putin declined this so called offer and sensibly refused to bow to threats against the Olympics in Sochi and implied threats to stir up Muslims in the Caucasus on Russia’s southern flank.

    Russia has access to more oil in the Arctic which partially offsets the loss of any quasi monopoly of gas that they might have currently.

    Western intervention in Syria will have serious consequences that as yet we do not know, so like the American military who have serious reservations, Obama, Hollande, Erdogan and in the wings, Cameron need to be careful what they wish for.
