This is a truly amazing, MUST-READ story in the FT. Check it out!

via Obama admits botched online healthcare launch – FT.com.

As I read the article my vision was of President Obama as an insurance salesman saying:

I’ve got just the policy for you!

On a more serious note, it is deeply disturbing that the President of the US needs to intervene because of glitches in a US Government web-site. Maybe the Republicans were right after all?

Let me turn this to an open question:

Should there be a moratorium on the roll-out of Obamacare to permit an independent risk assessment and re-costing of the program?

Any thoughts?

  1. The FT article that Dr Alf has brought to our attention illustrates once again that President Obama is out of his depth, does not think through the consequences of his policies and for all his talk about caution is too lazy to manage those who are in charge of or should be in charge of the detail.
US private medical insurance,as I can remember from living and working in that country and using it to pay for the birth of my adopted son ,is a wonderful thing.
It is wonderful if you are under age 74 and still working because the costs can be spread over larger numbers of people and brought within reasonable limits.
However the American Medical Association ensures that doctors form a very powerful lobby and are few in number thus keeping remuneration for their members extremely high.
More advanced treatments ,vexatious litigants and the drug companies collectively cause the overall costs of American Healthcare to be 16.4% of GDP as opposed to 6% for the NHS plus the hidden costs of Adult Social Care.
With rising expectations bordering on a desire for quasi immortality these costs could rise to the point where no-one could afford them.
President Obama was not concerned with those who are covered but wanted to do something for the 50 million or so people ,representing about 14% of the population who have no medical insurance at all.
To expect ,after a brutal recession, those working and in business to effectively carry the costs of medical insurance for this minority in full was always going to be problematic whether the care was delivered in person,by mobile phone app,the internet , telephone, visiting nurse, psychologist, carer, magician or carrier pidgeon
The solution always had to be:
–More self diagnosis and preventative measures
    –Variable taxes on foods
–Better health and education so that people take more responsibility for their own health
    –More exercise
–Reducing fat,sugar,salt,e-number and chemical content in food
–Reducing harmful chemicals not conducive to good health in the environment, food containers, household goods, fertilisers, toys and cooking utensils
–Willingness to copy the best features of foreign health care systems and treatments particularly from France,Germany and Italy
Measures like these would reduce drug dependence, reduce insurance premiums and make the costs of insuring the non medically insured more reasonable thus avoiding all the furore and misinformation.
Managing the US economy better would have led to less waste and malfeasance and less need for damaging brinkmanship, silly posturing and political games.
