This is an important, thoughtful and worrying article from Gideon Rachman. Check it out!

Watch out for the rise of a European Tea Party – FT.com.

Whilst I identify with the argument, and agree that the far-right is on the rise in Europe, I do not envision a European Tea Party emerging. There is still remarkable consensus around the center in European politics despite all the noise. I struggle to see the more right-wing politicians uniting because their policies are likely to be nationalistic.

Any thoughts?

  2. Dr Alf has summed it up neatly , Gideon Rachman to be fair to the man,is understandably being watchful on behalf of Jewish people like himself and possibly other persecuted minorities who might again find themselves on the wrong end of a jackboot.
Although some conspiracy theorists and fundamentalist Christian sects talk about a “Future Fuehrer” who will unite Europe before Armageddon I see no immediate evidence for his arrival at the head of a European style “Tea Party”.
Currently in Europe we have an eclectic bunch of Right Wing politicians each pursuing unique agendas such as Geert Wilders in Holland,Umberto Bossi and Mussolini,s daughter in Italy,Nick Griffin of the BNP in the UK and Le Pen,s daughter in France.
As yet things have got to get a lot worse than they are now before a demogogue with rabble rousing capability can find his voice and pick out a single /multiple group to blame and then unite everyone under one party.
That said if I were in Gideon Rachman,s shoes I would go about my normal business writing things in the Guardian ,yet keeping a vigilant eye out for the future.
