This is today’s most popular news story in Pravda, Russia’s leading newspaper. Check it out!

via Boeing-777 was downed by Ukrainian MiG-29, Romanian expert says – English pravda.ru.

This is very, very different to the viewpoint of western politicians and mainstream media. It talks of a Ukranian plane, probably flown by a Polish pilot, deploying Israeli avionic technology.

  1. Dr Alf poses an interesting question now that contradictory stories are beginning to emerge about who actually shot down the Malaysian plane.
The Malaysian Government has purportedly said the same thing as Pravda ru but it seems odd that Vladimir Putin,s denials have not been forthcoming or at least not reported in the Western press.
The true answer is that we do not know and may never be told what really happened even though the Americans, the Russians, the Chinese all have satellites and track all flights along with Boeing, the makers of the plane and the makers of the engine
Regardess of that we have to consider what to do next and what the present impasse and sanctions could lead to.
Chancellor Merkel seems to be the only person with the brains and ability to speak Russian who can get Vladimir Putin to listen.
Logically then we need to ratchet down the rhetoric, follow Mrs Merkel,s prescription and arrive at a messy compromise.
The ingredients for this must be something like this:
1)Devolution within a looser federation for Eastern Ukraine along the lines of say Scotland within the UK as it is now and will be after the disengenuous Alex Salmond is put back in his box after his Voodoo economics and dodgy arithmetic are exposed more fully.
2)A cessation of fighting and the removal of Ukrainian Neo Nazis and pro Russian militiamen from the equation in the form of a return to barracks and a return to normality
3)Russian and German assistance for Eastern Ukraine and IMF assistance for the bankrupt Ukrainian economy as a whole.
4)Generous compensation for the families of those passengers and crew who were on the downed plane out of a fund set up for that purpose run by a charity politically independent from the Russian,Malaysian,Dutch and Australian Governments, say a Norwegian based or Swiss based charity which could also provide humanitarian aid to those displaced by or affected by the fighting.
5)A withdrawal of Russian forces to well within its borders
6)A real effort to avoid blame until the facts are established
7)Realpolitik applied to the sanctions which may well hurt us almost as much as Russia
8)Look to the future–Vladimir Putin will not be there forever and will be replaced and retire.
We in the West ought to be cultivating the next generation of Russian leaders and the one that will in turn succeed them.
