Opinion – Teaching the Children: Sharp Ideological Differences, Some Common Ground | Pew Research Center – John Gelmini

What should happen is that there should be no teaching unions and the school-day needs to be dramatically lengthened so that languages, salesmanship, NLP and presentation skills can be taught, along side everything else.

Teachers need to be drawn from all over the world, as Dr Alf suggests and there need to be far more men.

Head teachers should come from a variety of backgrounds, including ex officers from the Armed Forces who would inculcate discipline, planning and sound work habits into students.

At various points to deal with late developers and those who displayed academic brilliance early on, children should be divided into those who were academically inclined and those of a more practical disposition who would do better as SME business owners or craft based owner managed micro-business owners.

The latter would go into intensive business boot, camps where they would be required to learn at least two languages, create simple business plans, be taught to sell, present, segment a marketplace, advanced NLP, listening skills, questioning skills, creative thinking and work for themselves either here or in another country.

Older graybeards, possibly interim managers and gnarled consultants, who would otherwise be “benched” and fading into poverty and oblivion and younger people would teach them self motivation, planning, website building, how to use social media to drive enquiries, prospect qualification, self management and time management.

Other people would coach and the pace would be relentless for 12 hours a day plus Saturdays from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm for those slow on the uptake.

School holidays would be reduced to 4 weeks along with national holidays which in the UK are far too long for productivity to be anything like what it should be.

The academically inclined would go to university as now and get the diminishing number of professional and managerial jobs and the ones with technological flair would be evaluated for entrepreneurship and placed under former VCs and Business Angels if they showed a bias in that direction.

This would be preceded by 2 years of National Service with very few exceptions.

Trendy or left-wing, Guardian reading teachers would be sacked and consigned to the history books and purchasing, supply chain and the management of school buildings would be outsourced to the private sector.

Local Authorities would have nothing to do with schools, the appointment of teachers, interaction with Governors or discipline. Their role would be to govern locally on a regional basis whilst outsourcing most things to a rotating panel of outsourcers.

The pretense of “local democracy” and “local accountability” would be put to rest.
