This is an outstanding review of EU energy policy published by EurActiv. It’s a must-read. Check it out!

via EU adviser: Energy Union should take ‘holistic approach’ | EurActiv.

Regular readers of this blog will know that I have consistently argued in favor of a over-riding energy strategy for Europe. Whilst the ‘holistic’ approach identified in this article is a move in the right direction, it’s way short of a comprehensive strategy.

Why does strategy matter?

Well let’s take today’s news in Russia, that Turkey and Russia will executive a deal for a new pipeline to Turkey – finalization of the deal Q2 2015 and the gas flowing at the end of 2016.

Europe is just too slow and ponderous, without a clear direction. That direction needs to be guided by strategy. Let me give an example of a strategic project for Europe. How about a gas pipeline from Israel via Cyprus to Greece to leverage the benefit of offshore gas in the Eastern Mediterranean?
