I commend Angela Merkel‘s initiative. She is an outstanding political leader, assured, measured and focused.

Naturally, my mind wanders to the UK, where David Cameron‘s record on China has been less focused. Recent news has been very positive but he lost out severely in his early years in office.

Whilst the UK no longer has a sizable manufacturing sector thanks to the unions, it still has enormous research and development capability. Sadly, the UK relies too much on financial services and not enough on other sectors. To compete effectively with Germany, the UK urgently needs an industry strategy, combined with a highly focused approach to up-skilling the indigenous work-force and increasing exports.

Let’s hope that UK Chancellor, George Osborne, in his Tuesday Budget speech focuses on the following:

  • Rapidly growing the high-tech sector
  • Containing the Public Sector
  • De-risking and improving competition in the financial services sector
  • Shaking the tree in regulated industries in favor of consumers
  • Up-skilling the UK’s indigenous work-force
  • Encouraging professional selling and languages to increase UK exports

With one of the worst cancer outcome records in Europe, perhaps the UK government should introduce worms as a cost-effective part of it reform strategy for the National Health Service (NHS)?
