In my earlier corporate career, I was closely involved with Japan, and on visiting witnessed first hand the ‘Japanese father’. I saw many fathers working away from home, visiting the company’s favorite bar, where the company’s whiskey bottle was carefully marked every night.

Perhaps, without fathers regularly on the scene in Japan, it’s no surprise that Japan’s population is aging?

I have long been fascinated with Japan and my doctorate looked at Japanese business practices adopted by the West. It’s now interesting to reflect on Western society picking up the ‘Japanese father disease’. Too many Western fathers are routinely away from home for much of their work lives.

So should Western mothers be worried that Western fathers will become like Japanese fathers?
