Just one in 100 parents spot obesity in their children – Telegraph

This is a deeply worrying article from the Telegraph. It’s a recommended read. Check it out!

I’m from an old-fashioned school of thought that believes that children should be taught the difference between ‘right and wrong‘. Using this moral compass, surely the parents are at fault for not countering their children’s obesity?

Is it time for parents and obese children to go to correctional ‘boot camp’?

  1. Dr Alf poses an interesting question but parents who often consist of the fattest woman in Western Europe and the 4th fattest men are hardly likely to recognise obesity in their offspring when they cannot see it in themselves.
The solution I see as National Service for school leavers before they go to work or attend university and variable taxes on foods to force people to eat sensibly.
Doctors would be required to prescribe Tai Chi,Pilates and fast walking and monitor patients electronically with tags and pedometers between regular checkups.
Elective surgery would be denied to patients who refused to lose weight ,stop smoking or cease excessive drinking.
Dr Alf’s more extreme remedy would be applied to the fattest and most recalcitrant and food manufacturers would be required to reduce sugar, salt and chemical content in food.whilst cookery classes would be part of the curriculum in schools and for today’s microwave generation of couch potatoes.
