With traditional jobs increasingly likely to be designed out by technology or off-shored to low-cost countries, self-employment is bound to increase strongly in countries that provide the fiscal incentives.

This trend is particularly generalizable to the UK where there’s also a growing self-employed sector. Unfortunately, in the UK, small businesses, like the self-employed, don’t get the same deal as big businesses. Big businesses are able to lobby and, through the use of tax experts, reduce their tax bill. Typical job growth in big businesses is stacking product on a super-market shelf or a zero-hours contract. It’s well known that real job growth comes more from smaller businesses.

Surely governments should provide incentives for more people to become self-employed?

One response

  1. Dr Alf articulates the position that exists now precisely.

Money is given to benefit recipients and those who keep on having children they cannot afford under “Working Tax Credits” which needs to be dramatically reduced and the money used to cross-subsidise self-employment.

Monies wasted on profligate local authorities, inefficient fire commands, constabularies and NHS managers need to be redirected into the promotion of export-led growth and the costs of the House of Lords cut in half through reform and reduction of the number of peers.

MPs in the Commons need to be reduced from 649 to closer to 200 and civil servants need to be capped in number to 15,000.

All the displaced people need to be redirected into self-employment or encouraged to finance the self-employment of others.

The Government needs to reconstitute Business Link and staff it properly, with properly paid experts not “volunteer business mentors” or life coaches dispensing gratuitous advice.

The country needs to be placed on a war footing for exports and the creation of self-employment and the unproductive sectors of the economy need to be shrunk until they do not exist on the current scale.
