The article reports a senior U.S. military official in the region telling NBC News on Wednesday, it’s almost certain that Russia will retaliate “heavily and militarily.”

With little chance of a political solution in Syria and in the absence of foreign armies on the ground from major powers, it will be hard to counter the terrorists. Both Obama and Putin need a strategy, ideally acting together?

One response

  1. Dr Alf is correct, ideally America and Russia should co-operate to eradicate ISIS, but our earlier ambivalence to take them on properly, deal with Erdogan in Turkey and bring ISIS’s Gulf State funders to heel complicates matters.
It seems that ISIS has also massed thousands of fighters close to the various former Soviet client states on Russia’s southern borders.
This has not been reported in the Western press, but Russia’s secret services are aware of it.
The response to ISIS at that point will be swift, certain and very severe as a matter of self-defence.
The response in Syria needs to be co-ordinated carefully and Russia will want Saudi Arabia to be punished as it is the prime funder of ISIS.
We will not want it punished as they buy arms from us.
All in all, it looks like a very dangerous situation in which Vladimir Putin will not sit on his hands despite being weaker than the West, militarily.
