The conclusion is that the only effective way to counter this group is with military force.

Unfortunately, we need to wait for the outcome of the US presidential election to make serious progress.

  1. As Dr Alf says ISIS makes money out of its captive subjects and slaves in the areas it controls plus money from stolen Iraqi oil shipped through Turkey with the knowledge and co-operation of Erdogan’s son.
It gets weapons and more money from the Gulf states plus logistical support from Turkey.
It is embedded in Raqua a city of 350,000 people and in Mosul where its commanders have fled to.
Defeating them will take military action involving ground troops over and above the rag tag army of Syrian rebel fighters and the Kurds, bunker busting thermobaric bombs to penetrate the new tunnels they have created and napalm to finish off any survivors.
Money and logistical support need to be cut off as well.

  2. I hope we can make progress sooner than that! But I object to the wording in the NYT article: ISIL is NOT mimicking the fiscal model of a state, it is imitating (very successfully) the Mafia methods of exaction…Thanks for drawing attention to this otherwise informative article.
