The Telegraph reports that MPs vote for air strikes by 397 to 223, with 66 Labour MPs backing the government, after Hilary Benn gives rousing closing speech.
Personally, I watched most of the debate on BBC Parliament. Listening to the diverse debate, I’m proud to say that I still believe in British democracy. Of course, I tended to empathize more with some views than others.
I felt that the complexity and risk of the Syrian conflict came across. Also it was good to see challenging questions being asked about which ‘allies’ are also supporting ISIS in funding and trade.
With my conservative political views, I struggled with the stance taken by Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn. But by and large it was an evening of respecting others’ views.
However, as the immediate news is digested, I’m sure that the media will return to focus on Corbyn’s broken Labour Party.
Hilary Benn is to be admired, as are all the Labour MPs who voted with their conscience against Corbyn’s line.
