According to DW, a top German news agency, shortly before another fateful EU summit on refugees, small, crisis-stricken Cyprus is being obstructive, making an agreement with Turkey all the more difficult to reach. An analysis is provided by DW’s Bernd Riegert.

As a resident in Cyprus, I take strong exception to the bias in this article. It assumes that anything proposed by Germany is best, so ‘be good children and play the game’.
Cyprus has suffered because Germany took a dislike to Russian investors in Cyprus. The terms of the Cyprus bailout were disgraceful. Unlike Greece, Cyprus has to date played the game and repaid her debts.
The Cyprus issues with Turkey are based upon international law and predate the current refugee crisis.
As a final word, Germany’s voters have recently shown Angela Merkel what they think of her policies on Syrian refugees.
Cyprus must play hardball and resist pressure from Angela Merkel.
