Citing latest research at Oxford University, the Telegraph reports that eating a piece of fruit each day significantly lowers the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke, an effect size as large as taking a statin.
This is an important research result as statins can have significant side effects whilst fruit is natural, healthy and well tolerated.
I wonder if this research will stop doctors prescribing statins so readily? I understand that in the UK it’s common for doctors to prescribe the cheapest statins but they’re not necessarily the most appropriate.
In my experience people who take statins often then ignore their diet as they think they’re protected by statins.
