The Independent reports that the prestigious medical journal The Lancet has been attacked for publishing an academic paper that claimed eating too little salt could increase the chance of dying from a heart attack or stroke. Researchers from the Population Health Research Institute in Canada, studied more than 130,000 people from 49 different countries on six continents and concluded people should consume salt “in moderation”, rather than trying to reduce it in accordance with government guidelines across the world.
The underlying crisis is increasing rates of obesity from poor attention healthcare. Salt is one of the ingredients that the food industry use too freely and society suffers. But governments refuse to stand up to the powerful food lobby.
Personally, I think that the Lancet article is irresponsible. It’s a black mark for British medical research. Surely publications like the Lancet must take account of the wider political and social context, otherwise it’s time to cut research funds?
