The Telegraph cites a new poll and reports that the majority of older voters, Conservative supporters, and men are now backing the campaign to stay in the EU following a collapse in support for Brexit.

Personally, I’m not surprised. For older people whatever their economic or social status, the warnings are now clear. Older people in the UK will be seriously worse off after a Brexit win. They now understand that they can influence the result by voting Remain. Some of these older people will still be suspicious of foreigners but their own well being will come first.

In the end, the Brexit referendum voters will be xenophobic right wing populists.

Personally, I question whether the Conservative Party will survive. Unless Brexit MPs return to the fold, an early election will follow and a Labour Government will be installed.

  1. Dr Alf is probably right ,however the polls have fluctuated wildly and matters are still too close to call given that the Remain camp was stressing its credentials as the promoter of young people who looked to the future rather than older voters who dreamt nostalgically about red post boxes, obsequious policemen, tea and crumpets, the village pub,Britannia ruling the waves, plentiful work and grateful foreigners who could be shouted at once in a while in true Basil Fawlty style.
