Here’s a brilliant piece by Sarah Lyall, published in the NYT. She describes how Boris Johnson, the chronically disheveled former mayor of London, was done in by his own hubris and lack of preparation in the face of the Brexit result.

There seems to be something wrong with a society that rewards the likes of Boris Johnson with another opportunity to make mischief. He told some very big lies to the British people then he walks away scot-free. It’s just one more public school prank to the likes of Johnson.

It’s disgraceful.

  1. We never were a meritocracy as Dr Alf knows all too well, too many people are appointed on the basis of being Oxbridge educated or “jolly good chaps” and just 7% of Times 1000 CEOs are women versus about 22% for the Fortune 500 in America.
The mendacious, the ineffective, the wilful and the stupid are in charge and lead gilded lives.

What happened with Boris is symptomatic of a broader and more pervasive malaise afflicting society generally in which the more lies you tell, the more mistakes you make, the better you do.

In his case I was taken in by his ability to schmooze and not upset the Chinese and others that David Cameron upset and I began to like what Michael Gove was doing when he was an education Minister.

Now I have come to change my view in line with Dr Alf’s but for different reasons.
