Opinion – Britain cannot easily dismiss Japanese Brexit warning letter | Politics | The Guardian

The Guardian reports that if non-EU countries’ economic interests continue to be threatened, the 15-page report from Japan may well be the first of many warning shots to the UK government.

This letter from Japan is important signal. Imagine similar signals from other non-EU trading partners. Then factor in the risk to trade with the EU if the UK presses hard for restrictions on EU migrants. The realities of the EU challenge are now getting clearer.

So far, the UK has not suffered but the short-term challenge was about confidence rather than substance. The medium/longer term challenges are much more substantial – factor in fear and uncertainty – and the UK government has some serious negotiating challenges ahead.

I was a passionate Remain advocate. I am still of the opinion that the UK will suffer severe economic damage from Brexit and I fear there will not be a serious break in immigration too.

Surely it’s time for realism to prevail?

Thoughts?
