Here’s a good interview with Nobel winning economist, Joe Stiglitz, who is promoting his latest book. He tries to answer, ‘What in your view are the key problems of the euro and the Eurozone crisis‘?
Source: The Real Issues Of The Eurozone And How To Solve Them
I agree with Stiglitz that the Euro‘s problem is structural rather than say individual countries in Southern Europe. However, Stiglitz does not dwell on the Euro being designed to benefit Germany at the expense of Southern Europe. His idea of taxing Germany and passing money to Southern Europe is speculative folly. Can you imagine Germany supporting the Robin Hood tax?
On balance, this is most about promoting a new book rather than realistic solutions.
I have always been a passionate EU supporter and voted ‘Remain’ in the Brexit referendum. But it’s clear that Germany is abusing her power at the expense of the weaker members of the Eurozone. Unless Germany reforms, I sense that other countries will be pressed by populists for Exit referendums, like the UK. Meanwhile EU bureaucrats will protect Germany and postulate doom, whilst drinking champagne, living on lavish expenses and dreaming of solid gold pensions.
