In this highly critical article, the UK’s liberal Independent argues that President Trump’s latest intervention is what you get with a reflexive president. It reports that in a neck-snapping 48 hours, he has gone from ‘America First’ to plunging headlong into punching militarily into the heart of a conflict thousands of miles from the homeland. It speculates whether he’s gone from incoherency to coherency.

The article raises questions about the level of international discussion prior to intervention by Trump. There will also be questions within the US.

For sure, Trump has made his mark as president – now he needs to deploy US  power effectively to fight for freedom in the face of oppression and evil regimes

In an excellent leader that Economist argues that the longer Russia and Iran keep Assad in power, the more they will share his guilt for war crimes.

It looks like the article was published before President Trump authorized the destruction of the Syrian military airbase that was responsible for the latest gas attack on the Syrian people. Russia was kept in the loop with advance warning.

It remains to be seen whether Trump will signal a wider change in policy in the Middle East.

One can only speculate that the US could offer Russia richer pickings than Syria.
