The cancellation of Boris Johnson’s trip to Moscow puts Britain in its place in the world | Editorial – The Independent

The Independent argues that the decision by Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, to cancel his visit to Moscow to meet Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, on Monday is a disappointing admission of Britain’s irrelevance in world affairs. It argues that it would have been a significant trip, the first by a British foreign secretary for five years.

The article concludes by questioning the dream of many Brexiteers of ‘Britain as a powerful, buccaneering nation, charting its own course in world’.

Trump has accepted a reciprocal state visit to China and both sides have agreed to structured talks on a wide range of issues.

This is good news and comes at the same time as a short-term chill in US relations with Russia, following the US intervention in Syria – bombing an airport used for launching military planes dropping chemical weapons.
