The Washington Post argues that the only way to restore trust now is with a special counsel for the Russia case.
Firing the head of the FBI for incompetence is a massive step, especially when the FBI were investigating Russian actions.
Every liberal will believe that Trump’s action was political and to remove a powerful threat to his presidency. The case for a special prosecutor is compelling but will it happen? If there’s no special prosecutor, surely it brings into question the integrity of the US’s famous checks and balances?

Dr Alf is right and will be even more right if the investigation into Russian links with the Trump campaign stops,runs into difficulty,fails to be funded properly or finds no wrongdoing through lack of compelling evidence or if the investigation is deliberately botched or staffed with less than zealous agents who softpedal,pursue irrelevant lines of enquiry or proceed too slowly.
American checks and balances are still intact but this firing leaves a nasty taste in the mouth as does Donald Trump’s dynastic intentions ,his use and employment of his daughter Ivanka and his son in law as if he was acting like a Tudor King.
We need to know what happened and if it was achieved through foreign interference then the chips must be allowed to land where they may.
