China’s grand plan for the Brahmaputra: A 1,000km tunnel to divert water away from Tibet — Quartz

Here’s a fascinating article where this massive engineering project could become another point of tension between the two Asian neighbours, China and India.

We’re now looking at China’s geopolitical leverage being re-engineered by radical engineering. According to the Oxford Dictionary ‘geopolitics’  is defined as ‘politics, especially international relations, as influenced by geographical factors’.

The vision of China creating their own California out of a desert will give China huge geopolitical leverage. But this isn’t like Israeli agricultural projects where the  water came from Israel becoming global experts in desalination. China’s project is a zero sum game, where China will be the winner and probably India and Bangladesh the loser. The economic downside for both India and Bangladesh are unclear. Policy makers in India will be exploring policies to keep their geopolitical leverage and, of course, their continued access to their natural water. But India is probably too weak to effectively challenge China.

So will China’s Brahmaputra Project push India more strategically into alliance with the US?

Thoughts?
