This is an excellent read from the Japan Times. It reports that scientists confirm that sleep deprivation has a detrimental impact on physical and mental health.

This quite lengthy article looks at case studies in Japan and international research evidence.

It seems that of the OECD countries, Japan and Korea get the least sleep on average and France tops the league for sleep.

The article cites evidence that sleep deprivation can be seriously harmful and too much sleep can be problematic just like too little.

Opinion – Refugees fleeing to Europe living in Nazi barracks at Buchenwald | Daily Mail Online

According to this alarming story by the UK’s Daily Mail, refugees in Germany are being housed in a former Nazi concentration camp where thousands of slave-labourers were once held.

Expect this story to take the shine off Germany’s proud record on humanitarian intervention with the refugees from Syria. Add this to push-back from both conservatives and liberals in Germany against Angela Merkel‘s robust policy on refugees.

The thing is that Merkel has used crisis management to deal with a strategic challenge but she has underestimated the size of the challenge – indeed her policies are precipitating the flight of refugees, as more and more want to go to Germany.

Once again, the problem with Merkel’s response are two-fold. Firstly, she is not effectively focused on eliminating the source of the challenge – this is both a foreign and defense policy issue. Secondly, she is not addressing the social time-bomb of an open-ended immigration policy.

Let me ask an open question:

Is Merkel’s immigration policy doomed to failure?
