According to the Economist, central banks are now major creditors of western governments, guarantors of the financial system, set the cost of borrowing, potentially control access to housing finance (via macroprudential policy) and, at the ECB, mediating between the claims of creditor and debtor governments.

Argentina is in deep economic difficulties once again and this popular move is probably designed to take people’s minds off poverty. Meanwhile, China is pleased to oblige and strengthen geo-political influence.

With the U-turn of Obama’s foreign policy and austerity in Europe, both Russia and China are stretching their geopolitical influence.
