This is a must-read article in the SMH, describing the US discovery of a new super antibiotic. Check it out!
A few years ago, my wife picked up a serious infection after a sand-fly bite. It was resistant to two courses of powerful antibiotics. The doctor wisely took a swab and had the infection analyzed in the lab. A few days later, the doctor phoned her with the news that she had contracted a potentially fatal, super-bug and there was only one known antibiotic. This antibiotic had some nasty side effects but eventually she took the course. I often think that perhaps she was just in time.
So for me, the discovery of a new generation antibiotic is a wonderful achievement.
Sadly, I wonder that perhaps our bodies have become resistant to earlier wonder drugs because of over-prescription?
