In this excellent Brookings publication, it is argued that the economic, political, and security strategy that the United States has pursued for more than seven decades is under attack by leading political candidates in both parties. The authors, Ivo Daalder and Robert Kagan, argue that the US plays an essential role in supporting the international environment from which Americans benefit greatly. They conclude that there’s a need to convince the US public.

This article makes a really good read but ignores the point that President Obama has greatly weakened the effectiveness of American foreign policy.
