Pardon the pun, but it looks like Cyprus has her foot on the gas again!

Of course, there are doubters and risks. There are contextual factors like the price of energy and politics in the Eastern Mediterranean. But the Eastern Mediterranean is strategically important. Cyprus has long been a home for Russian people, now the Chinese are coming too.

Could the Eastern Med become the new North Sea of energy?

I am resident in Cyprus so can easily identify with the article.

There are a number of critical factors for Cyprus to help promote itself as an increasingly important investment hub:

  1. Adhere to the troika’s advice on financial recovery
  2. Successfully exploit offshore gas and oil
  3. Reach accommodation with Turkey on Northern Cyprus and the related issues
  4. Encourage inbound investment in strategic industries, like technology (like a near-shore hub for high technology from Israel)
  5. Open up the economy to greater competition, especially in the construction and the service sectors
