Whilst the title is rather ambitious, the article will be especially useful for foreign observers who are alarmed at the move to the right in France.

By tomorrow we shall know whether France has woken up or on a potentially dangerous journey with the Front National.

This Guardian editorial concludes that the terrorist outrage in Paris three weeks ago coincided with the resurgence of an anti-immigration, anti-Muslim populism in France.

Of course, this is just the first weekend of voting, with large abstention but the Socialists are currently trailing third.

Whether you love or loathe them, the FN (Front National) are a rising political force France. Another interpretation is that deeply unhappy with current policies on immigration/refugees and more broadly the loss of France’s national sovereignty.

These days the FN has tried to clean up its imagine but for me the hard-right remains the hard-right and Europe is deeply scarred by its history.
