This is an excellent article from Simon Johnson, writing in the Economix column in the NYT. Check it out, as it’s well worth a read in my view.

Sadly, there seems to be increasing evidence of one set of rules for the extremely wealthy and powerful. Ordinary people have a different set of rules, it would seem.

Defining Middle Class – NYTimes.com.

Personally, I am a bit horrified at the thought of the US presedential candidates defining middle-class by annual earnings expressed in US Dollars. For me, this is a bit tacky and seems to monetarize things that should not be monetarized.

For me, the concept of “middle class” is more about culture and values. Certainly, in the UK I believe this to be the case.
