I endorse much of the evidence cited by Nick Cohen but differ in that I do not blame it all on the late Margaret Thatcher’s privatization policy of the 1980‘s. My politics favors small government but effective regulation. I blame ineffective regulators in failing to enforce the public’s best interests with all the privatized industries; these are all still oligopolies. I agree with Nick Cohen that the political classes have been ineffective, especially David Cameron’s Government.

The article highlights, once again, how housing issues are impacting mobility and matching people to jobs. It also focuses on weaknesses in Government policy over the last twenty years, making some excellent recommendations. I broadly endorse Will Hutton’s suggestions but wonder about whom he was thinking when he referred to “political cowardice”?
