The Hill reports a Pew Research Poll claiming over 6 in 10 Americans view NATO favorably. The research also found strong support for the U.S. defending a NATO ally against Russia.

The timing is critical with President Trump visiting NATO this week and his previous campaign comments critical of NATO Article 5.

The world media will be watching President Trump carefully for a hint of changed US policy in relation to NATO.

Much as I dislike the sensationalism of the reporting from the UK’s Daily Mail, it captures the fears of a retaliatory escalation following Trump’ bombing in Syria. It cites Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev denouncing Donald Trump for attacking ‘the legitimate government of Syria’ and for allegedly breaking international law without the approval of the UN.

The rhetoric is getting ugly as the US explores the evidence of Russian complicity in chemical attacks. But we now have a dangerous situation in which two of the world’s leaders are narcissists supported by populism and fake news.
